CoRE is a Residential Life Shared Learning Environment within Binghamton University. It is made up of a collection of students from various majors, backgrounds, and locations who all share a common interest in computers, robotics, engineering, and technology in general. Membership in CoRE ties members to a long history of customs and traditions which help members grow socially as well as academically. By living together, CoRE members are able to share their knowledge with each other in a way that promotes the education of both the members and the University as a whole. It is a very friendly place where members make a strong effort to reach out to new members and make them part of the CoRE family.
Every year, CoRE hosts an event called CoRE Lore. For this event, CoRE prepares a Thanksgiving meal for former members, alumni, faculty and close friends to attend. Stories are told by current and former members about funny or otherwise memorable events that took place throughout the history of CoRE. All of CoRE has to help in preparing the food, providing a bonding experience between them, as well as a chance to meet former CoRE members. Many alumni hold jobs in the fields current members are studying for, creating potential career opportunities in the future
We also host many other less formal events, such as the CoRE Barbecue in the spring and Minimum Underkill, a LAN party for CoRE members and friends. These events really bring the CoRE community closer together.
Besides the members and their connections, CoRE also has some of its own resources. We have our own room, the Pseudopod, in which we have various books, electronics equipment, computers, and tools to help ourselves and the Binghamton community with homework or other projects. Also located in The Pseudopod is our own server, nicknamed Ziggy, for members to use for webpages, coding, or testing software. The room has a TV, a few old video game systems, and a number of board games. Many members use the Pseudopod for computer and engineering related projects, or just for a quite place to do homework, so you will usually see someone working on something you are interested in.
CoRE is always looking for new members to join. There is no requirement of experience or skill, only an interest in computers, robotics, engineering, or technology is needed. It is open to both incoming freshmen and current students living on campus. To join CoRE, talk to a current member or ask Residential Life. Ask well in advance of Housing Signups (or in the case of incoming freshmen, the residential form's due date) to help secure your spot on the floor. If you have any other questions about CoRE, check out the Contact CoRE page or visit our forums.
